Michael Jackson and Roman Polanski. Your treatment of the two of them is very different but their situations are similar. I'm not criticizing you. I tend to see it the same way, I'm just not sure why. Maybe it's because MJ's guilt is less clear. The ugly possibility that I don't really want to look at is that it might be how much more MJ's art has moved me over the years. Ultimately I'd like to put Polanski in jail and I would have put MJ in a high quality mental facility where he could be cared for and kept from harming society. Mj can point to his tragic childhood of performance and stardom, in fact I heard a rumor that he was given hormones before and during adolescence to keep his voice from changing. Polanski is a holocaust survivor. Why does MJ get a pass to the degree that he does from you and me? I don't know exactly how much you differentiate between the two, but your difference in tone is unmistakable. On a different note, I just discovered these pieces from you on the youtube which then led me here. I've now spent many hours watching and listening to your work. Smart and entertaining. Hats off. I saw the first few clips without having seen your name and enjoyed them. When I finally managed to look up and see who you are, I thought "That's funny, I remember back around 92 there was this guy with Z Black on the Underground Railroad with the same name." I still didn't think it was you. I saw one or two more clips and decided to comment and ask. Somehow my genius computer didn't comply and I wound up reading that it's you a bit later. I heard that song from Kool G Rap and Brand New Heavies for the first time from you. Long before it came out. I heard quite a bit of cool stuff from you back then. I am processing two massive emotional reactions. The first is the reaction to the power of your content. All the thoughts and feelings it evoked. For me, listening to Billie Jean on cassette on my best friend's stereo in the 80's was pretty transformative. It really knocked me out, and preceded a zipper jacket phase, and a later, deeper appreciation of that music as I became a musician myself. Considering the elements that encompassed his life, all that... its large. But the second emotional reaction is to the delivery of that content. That was a powerful five and a half minutes, and really, one of the best pieces of journalism and writing that I have been exposed to in quite some time. What you did there, it really affected me man. Thank you for doing it, and providing an example of what artisan craftsmanship looks and sounds like. That was the single best memorial I could ever imagine for such a complex and talented person, worthy of the talent it considered. Again, thank you for your work. Seth I am torn at the moment. The high pitch of the media machine drowns out most of the middle road voices. MJ had a lot to do with that. I miss the greatness with which he held that honor. Never mediocre, never tasteless, always with love. In the Obama age of pseudo-feminism and the like, I don't think main stream artists feel the urgency of their gifts. Not like MJ did.
