Check One Two, Is This Thing On?

by jay smooth on 07/27/2010

Trying to make some quick videos this week, to get back in the swing of things. I know I asked for topics on twitter a couple of weeks ago, but right after that I snarked about Chris Brown and about 500 people retweeted it, and then the site wouldn’t let me search back to your Qs. So apologies to everyone who made suggestions last time! But if you’d like another go at it: What should I talk about?

Your voice audio is only on the left channel. Beat is on both.

Otherwise, great to hear from you!

Good to know ur not dead.
And i’m a creative grave yard, i don’t have any ideas for you :(

Now it’s fixed. Probably a Youtube problem.

A while ago you mentioned Asher Roth chastising black rappers (“these black rappers make me sick”) and how that was an entirely different conversation from the “nappy headed hoes” comment. I’d love to see a video where you expand on this. Especially. Now as Asher Roth is Making more music and the “smart hip hop” classification trend grows.

Miss you, Jay!

You might’ve talked about it before… but there are always more examples and fights to think about… talk about gender stereotypes! The way young females are forced by society’s expectations into trying to be either brainless princesses or sluts, and young males expected to be aggressive builders, winners & thinkers.

I’m sure you’ve got some interesting insights on the whole Burqa Ban in France.

In general I think (and I speak as an unelected representative of the whole of the internet) we’re just glad to have you making videos again, regardless of the topic.

Gosh, I don’t know, there is a little bit about race in the news these days . . .

Glad to have you back.

I’d like your take on the Shirley Sherrod fiasco.

Molly 07/27/2010 at 9:55 am

Good to hear from you, Jay! And bonus points for the Garfield Minus Garfield reference. ;) Can’t wait for more videos!

I haven’t made a new vid in ages either. *sigh* It’s the heat…

Oscar Grant, Jesse Jackson/Dan Gilbert/Lebron, Oscar Grant coverage vs. Lebron coverage, Burqa Banning, NAACP/Shirley Sherrod/The White House, or you could expound on your Chris Brown snark

Also, not sure if you’ve seen this, but BET says they had a Guru tribute (along with Marvin Isley and Naomi Sims) but that they had a “technical glitch”. You can read the explanation and see the tribute in this interview: http://allhiphop.com/stories/news/archive/2010/07/01/22283705.aspx

The NAACP/Tea Party back and forth–specifically, why would the NAACP call the Tea Party a “racist organization”? Being right aside, it breaks the rule you laid out in your talking-about-racist-acts video. I can’t believe that the NAACP couldn’t see the Tea Party’s response coming–lots of people did. So, did the NAACP see it coming? And if they did, why did they still say it (if that is what they said, I never checked)? I can’t figure it out.

BET, The Boondocks and Aaron McGruder

Jay is now the internet’s version of Andres Cantor hahaha.

Tahu 07/28/2010 at 4:32 am

hi Jay.pretty much the same as shot (although i hadnt applied the -what they did logic -to it as shot had and thought that would be an intresting line of thought) but also the media (over?) reaction to the Shirley Sherrod video (the original short misrepresentation). That had “out of context” written all over it.was there anyone calling for further investigation before condemnation???Thanks.PeaceOut…

any thoughts on whether much rap will ever expound on possibilities for grown people on raising our daily quality of life that don’t involve shopping, getting f*cked up, clubbing, or sex?

Cadiar 07/31/2010 at 5:28 pm

The vuvuzela makes this video art. XD

Da Best OFs 07/31/2010 at 9:02 pm

I would like to hear your thoughts on KRS One’s boycott of the National Museum of Hip Hop its kinda ironic

duck-billed placelot 08/09/2010 at 8:36 pm

Can you talk about monetary policy, please, and how we’re at basically no inflation for no reason? And the way crappy economic times lead to more assholish/racist behavior (see: Arizona)? And maybe some more socio-linguistic posts? Your no-homo explication is one of my favorites.

And also, do you do any merchandising? I’d like to support your efforts here/ have a coffee mug or tshirt or button or whatnot that both shows like-minded people how cool I am and gives you some advertising.
